Project overview
This short motion ident was designed for Nodefest in response to its Flora & Fauna theme. I chose the seagull, a bird closely connected to everyday Australian city life, and used simplified geometry, flat colour and limited detail to keep the character language consistent with the Node mark.
Narrative concept
The animation opens on an event screen playing design work. A seagull suddenly approaches and blocks the view, taking over the display with the shameless confidence of a real urban seagull. As it watches, its expression becomes more exaggerated; its beak then turns geometric, rotates and simplifies until it resolves into the red Node mark.
This small story uses character comedy and a sense of breaking the fourth wall, making the logo reveal the ending of the narrative rather than just another transition.
Visual development and production
Early sketches tested the seagull's proportions, poses and expressions. The final character is built from broad geometric planes, making it readable within seconds and easy to separate and animate in After Effects.
The project gave me practice in establishing a character, creating a memorable beat and landing a natural brand reveal within a fifteen-to-thirty-second constraint.
